Carter A Top Candidate For Cup Series Director

Posted on January 23rd, 2010 by Stephen Rhodes in NASCAR - Sprint Cup Series - News/Rumors

It certainly take very long for the suits up in NASCAR to find a top candidate for the vacant position of Sprint Cup director as former crew chief Larry Carter has emerged; the vacancy became available when John Darby was promoted to a management position over at NASCAR’s Research and Development Center in Concord, NC.

Carter most recently served as crew chief for driver Paul Menard at Yates Racing, but was not retained when Yates merges with Richard Petty Motorsports. He cut his NASCAR teeth back in 1999 when he became a Sprint Cup crew chief  with driver Jimmy Spencer then went to Darrell Waltrip’s team in 2000.

In 2005, he served as Rusty Wallace’s crew chief during his final campaign as a driver; additionally, he served as crew chief for driver Jamie McMurray at Roush Fenway in 2007 and 2008 before joining Menard at Yates last season.

As of this post, NASCAR hasn’t indicated as to when they’ll fill the post, although they hope to have it filled when SpeedWeeks opens at Daytona in two weeks, at the earliest.
