Michael McDowell will attempt to run in every Sprint Cup race and every Nationwide Series race in 2010 as he will drive for Prism Motorsports in the Cup series and MacDonald Motorsports in Nationwide.
McDowell, who drove the No. 00 Cup car for much of the 2008 season at Michael Waltrip Racing, is looking forward to doing both series. He is one of four drivers – along with Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards, Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski and Paul Menard (Roush and Richard Petty Motorsports) – who plan on doing the full schedule on both circuits.
“I’m going to run all of them,” McDowell said in a phone interview Monday. “I’m going to try to work out with the other guys trying to go back-and-forth to get a ride with them.”
McDowell said that to make ends meet financially, he needs to run in both series and hopes that he gets to race with Prism Motorsports, which did not run many full Cup events last year when it qualified for races. Both teams are still looking for sponsorship, although MacDonald Motorsports has D.H. Griffin back as a sponsor for the season-opening race at Daytona.
“My livelihood depends on making [Cup] races and running good in the [Nationwide] championship in the driver points,” McDowell said. “For me, it’s good because I’m going to every race track, getting seat time and staying in the game. … Hopefully on the Nationwide side, we’ll have some good, strong runs and build a program and run in the top 10 in driver points and the top 15 in owner points.
“My day-to-day operations is at MacDonald Motorsports. That is my main focus. I’m trying to help Randy [MacDonald] build a program.”
McDowell will drive the No. 55 car in Cup as the Prism team has an alliance with Michael Waltrip Racing, which will provide cars for both McDowell and Dave Blaney through Prism. The team will get its engines from engine builder Mike Smith’s Pro Motors, which recently hired Terry Elledge to build Toyota engines for the company.
“It’s going to be a race-to-race deal,” McDowell said about whether the team tries to run the entire Cup races or has to start and park. “Phil [Parsons] and Randy Humphrey are actively pursuing sponsorship right now. Their goal is to race … [me] and Dave Blaney as well. We’re working hard on it. Having the alliance with MWR helps us a tremendous amount.”
Having made eight of the 10 races he attempted with Tommy Baldwin Racing last year, McDowell had hoped to drive more races in 2010 for the organization but Baldwin hired Mike Bliss.
“There was only a handful of races available to run the second car [at TBR],” McDowell said. “I enjoyed my time with Tommy and the relationship, but for me, just doing 10 races wasn’t going to be enough. Prism had a full-time program available for me.
“It’s heavily affiliated with MWR, so that was a huge part for me. I feel like I’m very much part of the family there and wanted to stay in that network. … After running the 00 car for MWR, there was a very good chance I would never get back in a Cup car at all. I’m fortunate for the opportunity to do what I did last year and prove myself as a guy who can make races and send good guys home and I think that created an opportunity for me this year.”
