Nuts And Bolts

Just one piece of news from the world of NASCAR:

  • Entering this weekend at Bristol, Travis Kvapil is hoping to improve on his 32nd spot in the point standings — and the team also is looking to better its season-best finish of 24th at Las Vegas. Kvapil will be making his eighth start at Bristol in Cup Series competition; his best finish is seventh in spring 2005. Kvapil also has one win at the track, in the Truck Series.

“You watch it on TV and see 43 guys piled on top of each other with nowhere to go,” Kvapil said of the BMS experience. “You then get the call to go there and race, and it’s a big ‘wow’ factor. You have to put your mind in the right place because you know it’s going to get wild. It’s like nothing else.

“Just crossing the track and seeing all that concrete, it was all new to me. I didn’t know what to expect. I went from being intimidated and nervous making my first laps there to winning the Truck race that night [Aug. 20, 2003]. You don’t go from intimidation to elation very often in life, but that was the case that night. It’s unique because I was nervous, but because I ended up winning my first time there it’s now one of my favorite tracks.”
