NASCAR Going To Pot?

If noticing the standard sponsors affixed to the hood of a NASCAR ride is old hat (Budweiser, Viagra and Marlboro) is old hat, then maybe there might be one that may catch your attention.

Over at All-American Speedway in Roseville, CA, they have a race that is under the NASCAR K&N Series banner this Saturday. All well and good, right?

Not so fast.

While the vast majority of the cars entered for that race – which is Saturday, by the way – have your typical sponsors, one car stands out in an unique way.

An entry in the race is sponsored by Dynamic Motorsports of Sacramento and will feature a giant marijuana leaf on its hood. That’s right – a marijuana leaf.

Specifically, the logo is courtesy of a pot-themed television show named “Cannabis Planet”, which airs on cable stations in Los Angeles and San Diego and is soon to hit the airwaves in Northern California.

According to Brad Lane, executive producer of Cannabis Planet Productions of Sunset Beach, CA:

“NASCAR has sponsorships  from alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals. We think it is high time that cannabis is represented.”

I want to think that the “high time” reference was unintentional. Anyways, Lane does indeed have a point; however, he conveniently forgets that cannabis, unlike alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals, is illegal.

It does make me wonder how NASCAR let this one get under the radar unless they have rules which emphasize leniency in terms of sponsorships.

Mr. Rhodes, perhaps you are unaware of CA Proposition 215 that was enacted by the people of California 14 years ago in 1996. It makes Cannabis LEGAL for medical purposes in California. There is similar legislation in 13 other states. The All American Speedway is located in Roseville, California.

I’m aware of the legislation, Brad. However, the advertising of cannabis or advocating it in the form of a sponsorship on a NASCAR ride. I don’t know if you have checked the demographics, but the average fan of NASCAR is not a user of cannabis.

I know that the standard rebuttal usually is, “But alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals are sponsors. Why not pot?”

The way that I look at it, until the plant does indeed become legal in the state of California and elsewhere (medicinal purposes aside), then in my opinion, it shouldn’t be affixed on a NASCAR hood as a sponsor. NASCAR is doing the fanbase a great disservice in allowing this sponsorship to proceed.

Stephen – don’t underestimate the “average fan of NASCAR”, I am certain there are thousands of them that live in the “Cannabis Closet” just as millions of Americans live in fear from the failed social policy of cannabis Prohibition. We incarcerate people for using a plant that is an amazing natural resource. In fact the entire body of a NASCAR sanctioned race car could be made from hemp plastic. Henry Ford was keenly aware of this technology yet was unable to utilize it due to prohibition.
Cannabis Planet is a TV SHOW – informing the public with information that has been supressed. The great disservice from NASCAR is the supression of Fist Amendment rights. This amzing plant has been on earth since the dawn of man, yet has only been prohibited for the past 74 years…Do the math.

I think on this subject, we will have to agree to disagree. But I will let NASCAR know my displeasure about them allowing a cannabis-based sponsor to be allowed to be affixed to a car in one of their series.

LOL…Stephen, I will agree to disagree – but I think you are a tad behind this story. NASCAR did NOT let our car race…so maybe you should send them some fan mail!
