MADISON , Ill. —Gateway International Speedway found something other than rain that could keep NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series from its appointed rounds.
A failure of the track lighting, attributed to a downed power line on a nearby highway, forced postponement of the CampingWorld.com 200 until Saturday. The race will be run as a doubleheader with the NASCAR Nationwide Series’ Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at the 1.25-mile track.
The race has been rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET, with the Nationwide qualifying session and race to follow at 4:35 p.m. ET and 8 p.m. ET, respectively.
Kevin Harvick will start from pole after winning the top spot during Friday afternoon’s qualifying session. James Buescher will take the green flag from the outside of the front row. Buescher and Brad Keselowski posted the exact same time during qualifying (33.767 seconds), but Buescher won the second starting spot on an owner points tiebreaker.
The power failure occurred at 8:55 p.m. ET, approximately 23 minutes before the field was scheduled to take the green flag for the 160-lap event. One hour and 39 minutes later, the track announced the postponement, indicating that the problem was one that would take several more hours to fix.
“Obviously, it wasn’t really anybody’s fault,” said three-time series champion Mike Skinner, who will start 13th. “It’s just one of those things that happened. … It is what it is. We’ll race it when we can race it. I think there’ll be a little bit different strategy—a lot of us set our trucks up for the racetrack to have a lot more grip.
“So it’s going to be some adjusting. It’s going to be a very hot day tomorrow. It’s going to be different for tires, different on the driver, but it is what it is. It’s out of our control.”
Notes: Harvick’s pole was his first in 105 starts in the truck series. He did start up front on owner points earlier this year at Martinsville , when rain washed out time trials, but that doesn’t count as a pole in the official stats. … Qualifying earlier in the day produced two interesting tiebreakers. In addition to Buescher edging Keselowski on owner points for the second spot, Chris Jones earned the final starting spot on an owner points tiebreaker over Chris Fontaine after both completed laps in 35.039 seconds. … Electrical issues aren’t new to Gateway. In 2008, a power failure there delayed the start of a Nationwide race for approximately 25 minutes.
