Pruett-Rojas clinch Grand-Am title for Ganassi

MONTREAL—Car owner Chip Ganassi claimed another major victory Saturday when Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas won the Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, clinching the Rolex Sports Car Series’ team championship in the Daytona Prototype class.

Pruett and Rojas set a single-season series record with their eighth Daytona Prototype victory. It was Ganassi’s fourth DP championship and comes in a year in which Ganassi drivers also won the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis 500.

Pruett and Rojas beat Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty by 2.005 seconds on the 2.709-mile road course. It was their 17th victory together, also a series record.

The path to the drivers championship is not so clear cut with one race left in the season, Sept. 11 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.

If each driver completes at least 30 minutes, Pruett and Rojas will be crowned co-champions. If one and not the other complete that minimum requirement, there will be a solo champion. And finally, if both fail to meet the minimum, they will still share the title.

The production-based GT class was won by Paul Edwards and Scott Russell in a Corvette to give Chevrolet its first GT win since 2003. Chevrolets finished 1-2-3 in GT.
